Fun with Spit!

Calvin's got this new language thing going on.  He's actually been doing this since he started cooing a few months ago, but lately he's been stringing it together as though carrying on a lip-pursing, bubble-blowing, spit-sharing conversation.  It really makes us crack up, and wring out a lot of bibs, and we wanted to share it with all of you.  Of course by the time we get the camera he's more than half done, but we figured it was viewer worthy anyhow (not that we're biased or anything).

Is that a laugh?

Calvin is working hard these days to gain control over his arms and hands, but he still has a long way to go. He can see those feet... but they are a lot harder to reach than he thought (use the force, Calvin, use the force!). The number of times that he hits his target (and is able to hold onto it) is only marginally greater than the number of times he misses. It's important to keep a sense of humor and be able to laugh at yourself during times like these. And if you can't laugh at yourself, at least laugh at green and blue plastic dog rattles...
Here is a video of Calvin's greatest accomplishment yet - his laugh (yes, it really is a laugh, not a frog in his throat), which he has been using increasingly over the past two or three weeks so that we finally caught it on tape.

It's amazing how quickly Calvin is changing, and just recently we have found ourselves getting to the really good part - the part where he is still pretty easy to get along with, but beginning to really respond to us and to his environment. He started smiling over two weeks ago, and added giggles last week, then just a few days ago he started to grab at things, perhaps mostly by accident but he is beginning to work more with his extremities, that's for sure! Though we have nearly an hour of what would be categorized as fairly boring footage by most folks, the following is about a 90 second snippet of some of our favorite moments. We especially like how, in the final seconds of the clip, Calvin gets frustrated trying to maneuver the giraffe and takes it out on the elephant: "what are you looking at? I'll just bop you in the face and then you won't laugh at me anymore for not being able to chew on this giraffe! Hah!"
